AN: there are a number of scenes that could use a bit of
thought-tag, beyond the comic reasons it was created

Setting aside his curiosity at those odd bulbs on the mad old
woman's bed, Gruber paused as they reached the top of the stairs, turning to
his companion, "René. I ... wanted to thank you. For defending me to your
... mother in law, back there. I... do understand she is not without reasons
for the evil thought, but-"
"Oh, of course, lieutenant. Do not worry yourself," René shrugged, for all
Gruber could see the twist of his lips was not matched by any humour in his
eyes, "There are many evil things done by all sides in war."
Gruber nodded, even more somber, continuing his original thought even more
slowly, "I hope you know, I would never- force myself, on a man, either."
René gave him an undecipherable look, but then relaxed and smiled a bit, for
a moment more... real, than he usually was, in his harried rushing about.
"Yes, Lieutenant. I do know that."
Gruber smiled, unaccountably pleased at the acknowledgement. Knowing that
René calling him friend had been... mostly to mollify the old woman. And
remembering far too many flinches, even less than 10 minutes past, from the
man when Gruber... got close. It was so... odd was not the right word -sad,
it was sad- that René himself was so often so very 'French' in his proximity
with people; even, on rare occasions, with Gruber. And yet, when it was
Gruber who...
Ah well. Gruber straightened, smile deepening and his chin ticking up; for
this moment, at least, the man was not uncomfortable with him. This was
good.
