Peace

By Wanderer (Wandering Smith)
July2000

Deep mountains,
Far from humanity's crowding presence,
Shrouded in evergreens and dark night.
A log cabin, snug against the cold,
Nestled in trees older than any creature that ever gazed upon them.
Snow falling steadily,
Bringing ever more silence and stillness to the world.

As you look to the sky,
You see the trails of pure white;
A million tiny comets,
Trailing their way to you,
Leading your mind back into the universe's infinity.
They slowly settle on you cheeks,
As gently as a lover's cherishing touch.
Chill they are,
Yet all you feel is the serenity of a perfect instant.

The smell of woodsmoke in the air,
Seeping into the dept of your soul.
And bringing with it inner warmth,
From the vision of flames dancing in the hearth.
The deep-seated memory of unconditional comfort felt,
As the silence without, settles the room within,
Awaiting your return to enfold you in it's reassuring embrace.

The sound of breathing,
Of a step,
Of a branch settling a bird's landing,
Of snow suddenly cascading to the ground;
All clear and crisp.
And yet they do not interfere,
With the utter silence and stillness of peace.

The only thing better than taking a deep breath,
And feeling yourself join the solitude,
Is to have someone you love and cherish,
Touch your shoulder,
As you slowly make your way,
Back to the waiting house and fire....
